For aspiring young talents, it has become the mainstay and creative space to showcase their abilities in the performing arts. Sangit Kala Mandir itself organizes a diverse array of programs and events spanning spiritual, educational, and entertaining themes.

Syt. Ganga Das Jhawar, Syt. Bulaki Das Bhatter, Syt. Girdhar Das Kothari, Devi Prasad Goenka and Syt. Shiv Bux Mohta met in the office of Syt. Basant Kumar Birla to give shape to their mutual desire of forming the cultural platform 'Sangit Kala Mandir'.

Sangit Kala Mandir was registered under the Registration of Societies Act XXI of 1860 and obtained the status of a 'Society'. The registered office of SKM was 15, India Exchange Place, Calcutta – 700001.

The First Meeting of the First Executive Committee was held on the day of registration of SKM.

With 5 Life Members and 39 Ordinary Members, the Executive Committee decided to organise the inaugural function of the Society on May 14, 1945

Syt. B.K.Birla initiated the idea of a Kavi Sammelan, explaining the purpose and relevance of literary functions in the context of the Society's objectives. The First Kavi Sammelan was held in January, 1949, at Dalhousie Institute Hall, featuring two poets, Late Dr. Harivansh Rai 'Bachchan' and Late Dr. Shiv Mangal Singh 'Suman'.

With the introduction of ladies and family guests, the audience profile of SKM also changed and it slowly started to emerge as one big 'SKM family'.

The Executive Committee initiated the creation of a Building Fund to enable the construction of it's own auditorium.

The Executive Committee decided to form a Trust for the funds that were being collected for the proposed auditorium.

The Executive Committee decided to buy a house at 4, Hungerford Street.

Noted violinist Leo Cherniavsky from the U.S.S.R. gave an excellent show for SKM members. He is the First European artiste to perform for the Society.

Besides classical music, the Society decided to introduce light music like film songs in their programme agenda. The First Light Music programme was organised featuring Pankaj Mullick singing famous Hindi film songs.

The Executive Committee decided to sell off the house on Hungerford Street and buy the Park Street premises.

The Society decided to hold free fortnightly film shows for its members and their children.

The Society decided that each member could bring 2 ladies and 2 gentlemen as their guests and the Committee Members could invite up to 10 guests. The organiser of the programme could invite 50 guests and the President of the Society could invite up to 200 guests for the Society's functions. This gave considerable exposure to the Society's functions and it was aimed to enrol new members. The Committee Members were also given enrolment targets for new memberships.

The First Qawali function was held featuring Pannalal Bose & Party.

The First Holi Meet was organised, where SKM members and their wives were invited for a social gathering at new Hindi High School.

The Hungerford Street house was sold off and the entire Park Street premises was bought.

The membership improved with 168 new members joining and the trend continued.

The First Classical Dance Drama - 'Shan-e-Oudh', was staged at the Hindi High School auditorium, featuring Pandit Birju Maharaj dancing to the tune set by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and sung by Ustad Moinuddin Khan Dagar.

Syt. Anand Swarup Misra, as a young man of 22 years, began his association with Sangit Kala Mandir, when he responded to SKM's advertisement for an energetic, young, and a graduate accountant.

The First Painting Exhibition was organised at Artistry House, displaying Rajasthani paintings by artists from Pilani.

Syt. Kishenchand Bagri formed the SKM Drama Section to provide a platform for amateur drama artistes.

SKM Drama Section staged its first play 'Unglion Ke Nishan', a resounding hit and earned a repeat performance.

Late Ghanshyamdasji Birla performed the foundation laying ceremony of the auditorium of Sangit Kala Mandir.

Kalamandir Auditorium was constructed.

Late Pandit Ramkinkerji Upadhyaya held a religious discourse programme for the Muhurat ceremony.

The First Programme on the stage of Kalamandir Auditorium was a religious discourse programme and was held on August 31, 1968, by Late Pandit Ramkinkerji Upadhyaya.

Deputy Prime Minister Late Morarji Desai performed the formal inauguration ceremony of Kalamandir Auditorium. Late Ghanshyamdasji Birla graciously presided on this occasion.

Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Sangit Kala Mandir was celebrated with much enthusiasm and happiness

Syt. B.K.Birla suggested the creation of a new division of SKM in order to accomodate new members. It was formed in 1972 and was named as 'Surabhika'.

Inaugural programme of Surabhika was held. SKM Drama Section staged a hit Hindi play, 'Chakkar Pe Chakkar'.

The First Members' Musical Programme was held in 1976.

Late Ghanshyam Dasji Birla had acceded to the committee's long-standing request, and gave an outstanding talk on Bapu.

Syt. Basant Kumar Birla suggested forming another Division of Sangit Kala Mandir on the lines of Surabhika, called 'Swar Vandana'.

Swar Vandana was formally inaugurated. The inaugural function was a ghazal programme of Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh.

The First Members' Light Musical Programme was held on December 30, 1982.

Another memorable address of Late Ghansham Dasji Birla, was at the Silver Jubilee of Pandit Ramkinkerji Upadhyaya's Ramayana discourse. On what proved to be his last public appearance in Calcutta, Late G.D.Birla graced the Silver Jubilee function of the annual pravachans on Ramcharitmanas in 1983 and delivered one of the most inspiring addresses ever, full of emotion and intense devotion.

The First Senior Members' Musical Programme 'Godhuli Bela Ke Vasanti Swar' was held, where Syt B K Birla sang an amazing duet with Dr ( Smt ) Sarala Birla.

SKM Youth Committee was formed under the leadership of Smt. Manjushree Khaitan along with Shri Aditya Lodha, Shri Harsh Lodha, and Smt. Meenakshi Periwal (née Lodha).

Shri Shailesh Khaitan and Shri Srikant Mantri started the SKM Cine Club in October 1983.

Sangit Kala Mandir joyously celebrated the completion of 40 years in 1985 with a special Ruby Jubilee celebration.

As a growing institution, SKM had witnessed important changes in its Memorandum of Association and its Rules and Regulations, which had been last printed in 1967.

The First SKM Utsav was 'SKM Utsav-1987', which was spread over a period of 8 days and showcased 10 excellent programmes. It was such a tremendous success that the overflowing audience had to be accommodated on the stage.

The number of programmes increased every year, peaking in 1988 when a record 75 programmes were held in 101 days!

The Executive Committee decided that for accounting purposes, the balances of the new divisions would stand merged in the Balance Sheet of SKM at the end of the year.

On the occasion of the 50th wedding anniversary of Syt. B.K.Birla and Dr.(Smt.) Sarala Birla, an interesting programme of Hindi film duets 'Yugal Bahar' was presented by the Members.

An outstanding special event was held with the eminent industrialist Late Syt. Aditya Vikram Birla, taking centre stage with his lecture 'Globalization of the Indian Industry- Footsteps towards the 21st Century'. Syt. A.V.Birla was given a momentous standing ovation by the audience as the Rotary Club of Calcutta presented the 'Platinum Jubilee Rotary Award' to him on the occasion, for his contribution to the field of Indian Industry.

The Golden Jubilee Year of Sangit Kala Mandir was held. Fifty glorious years were completed and the pride and joy was apparent in the beaming faces of its members.

Sur Siddhi was formally inaugurated.

Sangit Kala Mandir celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Year with much pomp and glory.

The Hony. Treasurer stated that Sangit Kala Mandir had formed three divisions, viz. Surabhika, Swar Vandana and Sur Siddhi.

Ultimately Swar Vandana was dissolved in 2009.

Our beloved Founder President Syt. B.K.Birla and Patron Dr.(Smt.) Sarala Birla, were given national recognition as the 'Longest Serving Couple in a non-profit cultural organisation' by Limca Book of Records 2010. This is a national record and is thus the pride of every Indian..

The Manager Shri A.S.Misra, was felicitated by Shri & Smt. B.K.Birla for completing 50-years of dedicated service to SKM.

The Bollywood star Dev Anand formally released on 30th April, 2011 the inspiring book 'Life Has No Full Stops'.

The Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal felicitated Shri & Smt. B.K.Birla on 29th April, 2012, for completing 70 years of their married life.

Sangit Kala Mandir entered its 70th year. Shri & Smt. B.K.Birla were felicitated on stage by SKM members, who gave a standing ovation accompanied with a resounding applause.

On 28th March 2015, our respected Patron Dr. Sarala Birla passed away.

Sangit Kala Mandir completed 70 glorious years with the concluding programme of 'Mahalakshmi' ballet by Hema Malini & her group.

Kolkata registered the very first concert by the celebrated Slovakian musical band – Balkansambel. Their musical performance enriched with their witty comments left the audience of Sangit Kala Mandir yearning for more.

On 3rd July 2019, Syt Basant Kumar Birla, Founder Member of Sangit Kala Mandir left for his heavenly abode.

Sangit Kala Mandir celebrated its 75 years. SKM Youth Wing was formed to cater to the changing tastes of the young generation.

The 75years institution took to the digital digital platform despite all the challenges of lockdown due to COVID - 19 pandemic. Sangit Kala Mandir with its divisions successfully presented a record breaking number of 200 virtual shows.

Santoor Maestro Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and Rahul Sharma performed for Sangit Kala Mandir’s 77th Founder’s Day . The performance mesmerized the audience. This was the last time Kolkata heard Pt. Shivkumar Sharma play.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away on 10th May 2022. Sangit Kala Mandir paid tribute to the Legendary Santoor Maestro by his son Rahul Sharma.

On 16th May 2024, Smt. Manjushree Khaitan, Honorary Treasurer & General Secretary of Sangit Kala Mandir passed away. Her passion and exemplary enthusiasm were foundational to the events organized by Sangit Kala Mandir.

Sangit Kala Mandir is in its 80th glorious year. We are very happy to have the active participation and guidance of our Patron & Honorary Treasurer Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla to take our glorious institution to its new heights.

The year ended with the outstanding musical tribute to one & only Anil Kapoor by our very own members. Anil Kapoor himself was profoundly moved by the heartfelt performance.
