The idea of forming a cultural space for the socially aware intelligentsia of the city of Kolkata stemmed in the mind of the eminent industrialist of India Syt. Basant Kumar Birla, who was then only 25 years of age. The two very close associates, Mr. G.D. Jhawar and Mr. B.D. Bhatter joined Mr. B.K.Birla in his decision.
